Environmentalists have warned that an effort to encourage the sustainable production of palm oil launched several years ago has not kept pace with expanding cultivation driven by rising demand.
The edible oil is a key ingredient in soap and everyday foods ranging from peanut butter to sweets but its cultivation is one of the biggest threats to the world’s dwindling rainforests.
The issue will loom large this week at the annual meeting of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil from November 22 to 24 in key producer Malaysia.

Spanish telecoms operator Telefónica (NYSE: TEF) posted a 429mn-euro (US$586mn) net loss during the third quarter of the year, compared to a net profit of 5.51bn euros in the same period in 2010, the company said in a release.
Revenues in the quarter reached 15.8bn euros, a 3.7% year-on-year increase.
Telefónica’s operational expenses increased 33.4% in the quarter, from 9.87bn euros to 13.2bn euros.
The results were attributed to the sustained weakness in consumer consumption in Spain and lackluster performance obtained in the rest of Europe.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A recent analysis from IHS iSuppli determined that Amazon’s $79 Kindle e-reader, which is the online retailer’s cheapest Kindle thus far, costs $84.25 to make.
In the report, iSuppli said the total cost of materials for the Kindle is $78.59, including $30.50 for the e-reader’s 6-inch E-ink display. T
The government urged cassava farmers to delay the harvest and keep their roots underground because prices are likely to increase later.
Next week the cabinet is scheduled to decide on a cassava mortgage programme, which is expected to start on Nov 15, offering a guaranteed price between 2.60 and 2.90 baht a kilogramme for the roots used to make tapioca.
Cassava is expected to rise from the current market price of 2.50 baht a kilogramme to three baht next year, said Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong after a policy meeting.
“We believe there will be high demand from both the food and energy sectors after the rainy season,” he said.
The committee has not set a budget for the programme as it will try to sell tapioca quickly to cut storage costs.
