A number of business support groups have pledged their support to small businesses affected by flooding in Cumbria.
Large parts of Cumbria were flooded last week following record amounts of rainfall across the region. The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, and the West Cumbria Development Agency (WCDA) are among the bodies to have come forward in support of small firms in the area.
The NWDA, which has pledged £1 million of extra funding to businesses impacted by the incident, paid a visit to businesses in Cumbria earlier this week. Ian Haythornthwaite, Executive Director of Resources at the NWDA, stated:
“The reason for our visit is to assess on the ground exactly what the need of the businesses is. The aim is to ensure that the support given is going to the right place and on the right timescale.
“Our primary concern is to ensure that funding gets into small businesses and we are providing flood recovery grants and expert advice such as cash law advice to people taking out extra loans.”
The Cumbria Chamber of Commerce said that it would use its experience of handling past crises, such as the Carlisle floods and the foot and mouth outbreak, to ensure that the right help is made available to needy firms.
The WCDA said that it will be establishing a presence at support centres around the region to make sure that business advice is readily available for those that need it.
