Cool Tool of the Week: Canada Post Comparison Shopper

Just in time for Christmas, Canada Post has put together a comparison shopping tool that’s tailor made for online shopping in Canada.

A shopping tool like Canada Post’s Comparison Shopper is something I’ve been hoping for for a long long time – an online shopping tool that lets you easily find products that you can get in Canada.

Because that’s the main limitation of most of the online shopping comparison tools out there. You spend the time searching and drilling down and filtering and finally finding what you’re sure is exactly the thing you’re looking for, only to find that the merchant who’s selling it doesn’t ship to Canada.

And even if they say they do, finding out exactly how much it will cost you to actually receive the item can be a difficult, time consuming process.

Canada Post’s Comparison Shopper eliminates the problem entirely. Every merchant listed ships to Canada. Even better, at first sight of a product, you see not only its price in Canadian dollars, but a listing of import fees if they apply.

For instance, browsing about the site, a pair of Vibram FiveFingers Performa Shoes caught my eye, listed at $114 Canadian – and right up front, I also see that those shoes from REI, an American retailer, would cost me an additional $79.79 in fees, $31.20 shipping, + $48.59 import fees.

But wait, there’s more, as they say on TV. Canada Post’s Comparison Shopper includes several features to help you make informed buying decisions, such as the ability to track price history and trends, and a best deal filter.

The search engine is not quite as granular as I would like. For instance, a search for “iPhone 3GS” pulled 667 results, many of which were related devices such as docking stations and ear phones, when all I wanted to see was the phones themselves.

However, this is an inconvenience I’m prepared to put up with for an online shopping search engine that ensures that every listed merchant ships to Canada and shows me an estimate of additional fees such as shipping and import fees.

I’m giving Canada Post’s Comparison Shopper a big thumbs up.
