Google One Pass to Rival Apple’s Service

Google has launched an application subscription service for publishers, called Google One Pass. The new service will provide publishers with a simple way to let consumers pay for the content and then access it from a number of devices simply by using their Gmail address and password. Payments will be made through the search company’s existing payment service Google Checkout.

One Pass comes just a day after Apple announced its new subscription model for publishers. The competitiveness of One Pass, a service currently limited to newspapers and magazines, is evident in the service pricing where Google’s cut in the sale of digital content is 10% compared to Apple’s 30% cut.

Other area that publishers will appreciate in One Pass is that they will keep control of user data. Publishers can customize how and when they charge for content and choose to offer subscriptions, metered access, „freemium“ content or even single articles for sale from their websites or mobile apps. The service also lets publishers give existing print subscribers free (or discounted) access to digital content, said Google.

According to Google, the service is quite easy to manage “Google One Pass is easy to implement and simple to manage. The set up is minimal and content will be managed through a simple online interface, so publishers can try out different approaches to selling content with minimal development cost and see what works for their business.“

One Pass is currently available to publishers in the U.K., U.S., Canada, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain, with a plan to expand to other countries in the future.
