Can I Tell My Employees Where Not to Eat?

Today’s Question

What small-business owners think.

Earlier this week, FrankJ, a reader from California, raised a question on a post written by Paul Downs. Because the comment raises several interesting issues — including how much control business owners have over their employees on their own time — we thought it was a worth a post of its own. Please read FrankJ’s question and leave a comment below.

I own a mobile food business. The owner of a restaurant near one of our locations objected to our being permitted there, caused a scene on our arrival, made several complaints to the city (which I must address each time), and has generally treated our business with contentiousness. Given the owner’s hostility and habit of filing complaints against our business, can I legally prohibit our employees from going there on their unpaid break? There are plenty of other options for food.
